One of my favorite things about being a letterpress printer has been meeting other printers, young and old. Over the years they’ve been one of the best resources for learning new tips and tricks, acquiring new equipment, and hearing tales of printing lore. The Midwest and Great Northern Printers’ Fair was the first printing events I ever went to –before I even had any printing equipment.
This year they are partnering with the Ladies of Letterpress and hosting Type on the Cob III at Printers’ Hall on the Thresher’s Grounds in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. There will be workshops, lectures, and printer camaraderie in abundance. I’ll be heading down to Mount Pleasant this September and I’d encourage anyone interested in learning more about the world of letterpress to join the fun. Check out more details here.
And for those wondering what past events have been like, I posted about the first Type on the Cob here and a past Midwest and Great Northern Printers’ Fair here.
For those following my Instagram account, you may have seen that I packed my pica pole and headed south to St. Louis for the Amalgamated Printer’s Association’s Wayzgoose back in June. The Firecracker Press and Central Print were great hosts and I had a blast catching up with old and new printer friends. Continue reading
It’s been awhile since the blog has had a post, so it is high time to dust her off! The past six months have been amazing, but crazy. We left off right before John and I got married in October. It was fantastic and I hope to share a peek at the paper goods soon.
The day after we got back from our honeymoon, the new lease started on the space in Mount Vernon. We got most everything moved in October and while I was setting up the new studio, John started a new job too, which meant a lot of late nights for the both of us.
In December we decided we didn’t have enough fun moving the studio, so we went ahead and bought our first house together. We moved in February and are still working on making it our home.
Now that things are a bit more settled, I’m looking forward to working on some of my bigger goals for Iron Leaf Press. There is a greater retail presence with this new space, so I’ve not only been trying to add lots of new ILP goodies, I’ve also had the opportunity to add some of my favorite makers into the retail mix. We’ve got jewelry from the talented gals at Made Community out of Iowa City and fun party/packaging supplies from Knot and Bow. And just delivered this week are beautiful ring dishes and vessels from Briggs Shore Ceramics, handcrafted in Cedar Rapids. These small businesses are a lot like mine and I love the opportunity to bring their beautiful work to my little shop.
Stop by the studio and see the new goodies.

That’s right folks, we’re doing another press move! Some of you may remember that the studio space in Lisbon is an incubator of sorts. When I moved in, I knew that it was temporary and it was a way to get a bigger space and build the business. Now that we’ve been in that space almost two and half years, its time to move out of the incubator and into our own little coop!
We’ll be moving the presses and our paper goodies back to where Iron Leaf Press started – in downtown Mount Vernon. It just so happens that it’s the same building that Iron Leaf Press started in, but instead of the upper floor apartment, we’ll be in the retail storefront down below.
And making 2015 a big year, Iron Leaf Press’s owner, Danielle Ameling (that’s me!), will be getting married this October and getting a new last name. John has helped the business from the ground up (somehow I even convinced him to help bring home ILP’s biggest press in the middle of some snow/sleet – fun photos here!) and I’m pretty excited to be getting hitched to him.
To prep for the wedding and studio move, the Iron Leaf Press location in Lisbon will be closed beginning Monday, September 28th and we will reopen in our Mount Vernon location mid-October. We’ll have a big grand opening in the new location as soon as the dust settles.
