In early years of US pencil manufacturing, most pencils were made from Tennessee red cedar. Toward the middle of the 20th century, pencil manufacturers switched to California incense cedar for pencil manufacturing, as it was easier to work with and more plentiful. Today, Musgrave Pencil Co. in Shelbyville, Tennessee has revived the Tennessee Red pencil, with a design to highlight the beautiful wood grain in Tennessee cedar.
